A Dundee man has been found guilty of carrying out a string of sexual attacks on young children.

Paul Angus, 56, raped three young children and attacked five others during a 12-year campaign of abuse.

At the High Court in Dundee, Angus was found guilty of 15 charges following a three-week trial at the High Court in Aberdeen.

Judge Lord Burns remanded him in custody and deferred sentence until next month.

He also placed the 56-year-old on the sex offenders register.

Branded as scum

A furious relative of one of the girls shouted “paedophile” as an emotionless Angus was led away in handcuffs after the verdict.

And another woman, whose granddaughter was amongst the victims, branded the 56-year-old as the “scum of the earth”.

It took a jury of eight women and seven men just over four-and-a-half hours to convict Angus of the charges by a majority verdict.

He was found guilty of three counts of rape, one attempted rape, one sexual assault and nine charges of using lewd and libidinous practices and behaviour towards the girls.

Young victims

He was also found guilty of attempting to defeat the ends of justice by contacting one of his rape victims on 14 April last year by text message and attempting to persuade her not to contact police.

The ages of the youths who were attacked at various locations in and around Dundee ranged from eight to 16.

They were assaulted between December 1988 and May 2010. None of the victims can be named for their protection.

Advocate depute David Nicolson lodged four victim impact statements with the court to be considered before sentence.

Angus’ counsel, Mhairi Richards QC, reserved her mitigation until the hearing.

Angus is set to be sentenced at the High Court in Edinburgh next month.
