Ex-newspaper editor claims he was banned from ordering kidnap victim’s autobiography

Prison officials have banned a convicted sex offender from reading kidnap survivor Jaycee Dugard’s autobiography on the grounds it includes graphic descriptions of sex and violence against children, it has been claimed.

Former newspaper editor Peter Braunstein, who was jailed for 18 years after posing as a firefighter before drugging and assaulting a co-worker, claims staff at New York State prison had labelled the book A Stolen Life child pornography.

Dugard was abducted at the age of 11 by Philip Garrido in 1991. She was kept as a sex slave for 18 years, during which she gave birth to two of her captor’s children.

After being banned from reading the book, Braunstein penned a press release from prison which was sent to the New York Post.

In it he claimed ‘New York officials accuse child abduction survivor Jaycee Dugard of ‘promoting child pornography’ in her autobiography.

According to a June 10 ‘Facility Media Review Committee’ by the Clinton Correctional facility, the Dugard book ‘violates Directive #4572’.

They claim pages 9, 10, 11, 13, 14, 15, and 17 of the book promote ‘child pornpography/sexual performanceof a child’ in violation of Guideline II B while pages 18, 19, 21, 24, 31, 32, & 33 were found to promote ‘rape/violence against women’ in violation of Guideline II C.

According to prison documents obtained by ABC News, Braunstein’s request to order the book by mail was refused due to the fact his sentence forbids him from reading material that includes ‘child pornography/sexual performance of a child’.
and ‘rape/violence against women.’

Department of Corrections spokeswoman Linda Foglia said prisoners’ reqiuests for books are reviewed, on a case by case basis.

She told NBC: ‘The material was censored as other publications are.

‘We determined the inmate would be precluded from having access to the book due to the content. This is in no means is meant to disrespect Jaycee Dugard.’

Miss Dugard, now 32, and her two children has received a $20 million settlement from state of California.

She was rescued in 2009, when two female police officers became suspicious of Garrido, a convicted rapist, and summoned the family – including Jaycee’s two daughters – to a parole meeting.

Garrido was sentenced to 431 years to life for the kidnap and rape of Miss Dugard. His wife Nancy was sentenced to 36 years to life.
