A Merseyside man has been extradited from Canada to face a number of charges over historical child sex allegations.

Paul Cleary, 61, from the Wirral, was brought back by detectives who made the 7,000-mile trip.

He appeared before magistrates on Wednesday to face 16 counts of sex abuse against two victims – dating back three decades.

It is alleged he indecently assaulted and committed acts of gross indecency against one Wirral girl.

He faces four counts of indecent assault against another girl.

‘Collected from Toronto’

A spokesman for Merseyside police confirmed: “On Tuesday, July 9, a 61-year-old man was charged with a number of offences under the Sexual Offences Act 1956.

“Paul Cleary was extradited from Canada and arrived in the UK on Tuesday, July 9.

“Two detectives from Merseyside collected [Mr] Cleary from Toronto, where he was being held by the Canadian authorities pending extradition.

“[Mr] Cleary was subsequently charged with 16 counts of sexual assault, which relate to the historical sexual abuse of two victims on Merseyside.”

He was remanded in custody to appear at Liverpool Crown Court on Friday for a bail hearing. A preliminary hearing will take place at Liverpool Crown Court on 24 July.
