A former police officer faces charges of child abuse in Bulwell against a girl as young as seven years old.

The charges date back to the 1970s when Alan Martin, who is now 71, was a serving police constable.

Martin appeared at Nottingham Crown Court on Monday when he pleaded not guilty to eight counts of indecent assault against the girl at a former social club in Bulwell.

Three of the offences are said to have happened between 25th July 1975 and 25th July 1976 when the girl was aged seven.

Two of the assaults are said to have been committed between 25th July 1976 and 25th July 1977 when the girl was aged eight.

Two of the offences are said to have happened between 25th June 1977 and 20th May 1978 when the girl was aged nine. And the eighth charge dates back to between 25th July 1975 and 28th May 1978.

Martin, who now lives at Teesbrook Drive, Wollaton, is accused of committing the assaults at the club. He was aged between 32 and 35 at the time.

The girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is now in her mid-40s. The court was told that, when the case comes to trial, she will be giving her evidence and answering cross-examination via a video-link.

Martin, who wore a dark jacket, open-necked shirt and dark trousers, spoke only tao confirm his identity at the hearing.

He faces a further charge of cruelty to a child between 25th July 1975 and 20th May 1978 in that, having responsibility for a boy aged under 16, he wilfully ill-treated him in a manner likely to cause suffering. He denied that charge too.

The court was told that Martin resigned as a police officer in September 1978 for reasons unconnected to the alleged assaults.

After hearing representations from Tina Dempster (prosecuting) and Adrian Reynolds (defending), Judge Michael Stokes, QC, adjourned the case until Monday 8th September for the start of a trial that is expected to last three to four days.
