Toilet rape bid victim, 12, traced
A man has been jailed for raping an 11-year-old boy at the Manchester Arndale shopping centre.
John Ferrier, 69, was sentenced by Manchester Crown Court to life in prison with a minimum term of eight years.
He also pleaded guilty to possessing a bladed article at an earlier hearing.
Greater Manchester Police said Ferrier approached the boy at the Arndale toilets in October 2013. They praised the victim’s “courage to come forward”.
The boy was dragged into a cubicle by Ferrier, police said.
The boy told a person outside what had happened, before telling a security guard. But he then ran away when he saw Ferrier come out of the toilets.
A security guard held the rapist until police arrived.
The boy was traced three days later when he spoke about the incident to police officers visiting his school.
Det Con Simon France, from Greater Manchester Police, said the victim “had a terrifying ordeal and it was not easy for him to admit what had happened”.
“I would also like to thank members of the public and the staff at Manchester Arndale as it was due to their quick actions that meant a dangerous man was stopped and arrested at the scene,” he added.
