Elderly pervert Frederick Smith was jailed for 12 months in June at Ipswich Crown Court for sexually abusing the schoolgirl over a 10-year-period in the 70s and 80s
Britain’s oldest paedophile has died in prison at the age of 94 – justweeks after being sentenced for sexually abusing a schoolgirl.
Frederick Smith died at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital after falling out of his bed in Norwich Prison and fracturing his ribs. His condition worsened once in hospital.
An inquest into his death has opened and authorities told the Mirror.co.uk on Tuesday that the probe was continuing.
The elderly pervert was jailed for 12 months in June at Ipswich Crown Court for sexually abusing the schoolgirl over a 10-year-period in the 70s and 80s.
He admitted four offences of indecent assault between 1972 and 1982 and one count of indecency with a child from 1972-76.
The now middle-aged victim said Smith sexually assaulted her a number of times for years and she had feared he would kill her if she reported him. He first abused her in a shack used by bus drivers.
Judge David Goodin told Smith, of Haverhill, Suffolk, as he sent him down: “As frail as you are, bent over your Zimmer frame, justice cries out that you be sent to prison for your crimes.”
He was taken from his care home to prison in a wheelchair and died on September 26.
A prison service spokesperson said: “HMP Norwich prisoner Frederick Smith was pronounced dead at an outside hospital on September 26.
“As with all deaths in custody there will be an investigation by the independent Prisons and Probation Ombudsman.”
