A jilted husband has told how his identity was stolen by his best friend who turned out to be a paedophile and went on the run with his wife.

Martyn Foster, 59, was left to bring up two daughters under the age of six after his wife Susan disappeared with Michael Evans – weeks before he was due to stand trial for child sex offences.

Evans, 61, who was known as Michael Kime at the time of the charges in 1988, was brought to justice last month after police discovered the couple were living together in Kent.

It was then revealed that Evans had used his former friend’s identity to help evade authorities for over two decades.

Michael Evans was due to stand trial for child sex offences in May 1988, when he ran away

Mr Foster, from Grantham in Lincolnshire, had reported his wife missing after she walked out in May 1988.

But he never saw her again and knew nothing of her fate until she was tracked down during a routine cold case review two years ago.

Police discovered that not only was Susan Foster living under a new name in one of the home counties, but that she was also still with the partner who went on the run with her two decades ago.

Michael Evans finally stood trial last month and was found guilty of ten sexual offences on a young girl.

They included two charges of attempted rape and eight indecent assaults, which started when the victim was aged just eight.

The jury heard that while he was on the run, Evans worked on farms fruit picking for cash in hand.

He also used Mr Foster’s birth and marriage certificates to obtain a passport allowing him to travel to Crete to work picking olives when the season in Kent came to an end.
