A FORMER North-East teacher has fled a Scottish town after it emerged he was a serial paedophile who once complained to The Northern Echo children were over-protected.

Parents in Barrhead, near Glasgow, were shocked to learn from a local newspaper that Simeon Hope had been jailed three times for possessing indecent images of children.

Residents launched an on-line campaign to have him removed from his council house.

And last Thursday he was seen loading up a car of possessions and driving away.

A former Green Party candidate, Hope, was jailed for 18 months in 2000 after he downloaded and stored thousands of indecent images of youngsters on his computer at his former home in Willington, County Durham.

Hope had been on a short-term contract at Willington High School, North Tyneside, however the contract was not renewed after his conviction.

He then moved to Derbyshire where in 2003 he was jailed again after he downloaded and stored 37 indecent pictures of children.

Then in 2010, he was sent to prison for a third time after pleading guilty to eight counts of making or possessing indecent images of children.

Hope, who changed his name from Gary Anderson following his arrest in 2002, wrote an open letter to The Northern Echo, in 1998 – before any of his convictions – complaining that “children were over-protected by society”.

He said in the letter: ” A recent visit to Durham City’s new shopping streets, I was shocked to discover some disturbing posters which had been put up on boards in several locations.

“These warned children of the dangers of any contact with unfamiliar people – never talk to strangers, never accept sweets from them and so on.

“In today’s world, children are over-protected and are safer from the unknown than ever before, and this right-wing propaganda perpetuates the myth of the family as the only safe place, and every stranger as an enemy.”

During one court case, it emerged that the former teacher admitted during a police interview that he was sexually attracted to girls aged between eight and 12.

He also described people assigned to treat his urges as “fools” and bragged: “My strategy is to tell these lovely, caring people what they like to hear. I want to be regarded as low-risk so I can lead a more normal life.”

A former prosecutor is facing a prison term after he admitted downloading indecent images of children.

Stuart MacFarlane, 45, from Glasgow, was caught with almost 15,000 images at his former family home in Eaglesham, East Renfrewshire, on 28 December 2012.

Sentence on MacFarlane was deferred at Paisley Sheriff Court and his name was placed on the sex offenders’ register.

A case against the ex-depute procurator fiscal, after he was allegedly caught with a prostitute, was dropped in 2006.

‘Dad’s Den’

The court heard how police, acting under a search warrant, searched MacFarlane’s then family home at the end of last year.

They seized two laptops and an external hard drive from an outside shed, which had a plaque outside stating “Dad’s Den”.

After the computer equipment had been fully analysed, it was discovered that there were almost 15,000 still images.

Some showed children posing alone, others showed sexual activity between children and adults, while others featured an animal.

The girls involved in the images are thought to have ranged from three to 14 years of age.

MacFarlane, who now lives in Mount Florida, Glasgow, later admitted downloading the images between March and December last year.

A man who was caught with 20,000 indecent images of children has been jailed for four-and-a-half years.

Police raided Steven McArthur’s family home in Dunoon, Argyll, on 14 May last year following a wider investigation by West Midlands Police.

The 25-year-old admitted the charges against him, claiming he had an obsession which caused “no harm”.

At the High Court in Glasgow, McArthur was ordered to be supervised for another four years after his release.

The court heard how McArthur was caught after it was discovered he had passed on some images via a file-sharing website.

Obsessive habit

Prosecutor Sheena Fraser said: “He admitted viewing indecent images from the age of 13 until the day before the search.

“He claimed it was an obsession that he found impossible to give up as he found them sexually stimulating.”

Ms Fraser added McArthur knew what he was doing was illegal, but “saw no harm in his actions”.

The advocate depute went on: “He further claimed he did not require counselling or rehabilitation.”

The court heard that the images found were mainly of male children ranging in ages up to about 15.

Serial child sex offender guilty of assaulting two young girls

Published March 23, 2013 by misty534

A serial child sex offender is facing a lengthy jail sentence after a judge told him he had destroyed the innocence of two young girls.

John Sutherland, a former amateur puppeteer, was found guilty of raping a 12-year-old girl and attempting to rape another child at the High Court in Glasgow on Thursday.

An unrepentant Sutherland yelled “I am not finished with you yet” at his victims as he was led away to the cells.

After his trial the jury were told it was the third time Sutherland, 39, had been sent to prison for offences against young females.

Last year he was sentenced at Hull Crown Court to 21 months and put on the sex offenders register for ten years.

Previously he had been jailed for 12 months in 2001 and 18 months in 2006.

His two victims wept and hugged each other as the verdict was delivered in the latest trial.

Sutherland was described in court as a former “teenage international puppeteer” who once toured Europe with an amateur group. He was also previously employed by Butlins.

Judge Rita Rae QC told him: “You have been convicted of horrific crimes committed against two children.

“Various phrases have been used during the course of the trial – one used by both counsel is that you destroyed their innocence. That is precisely what you did.

“Let me just warn you that the custodial sentence in this case will be a significant one.”

Sutherland is due to be sentenced next month.
