Child sexual exploitation referrals in Waltham Forest revealed

Published October 24, 2014 by misty534

There have been 59 cases of child sexual exploitation referred to social services in the last year in Waltham Forest, a report has revealed.

News agency Openworld and Channel 4 News have published the results of Freedom of Information requests, submitted after it emerged at least 1,400 children in Rotherham were abused over a number of years despite the authorities being warned about the problem.

Figures show, in the 12 months up to April 22 this year, 66 per cent of the victims were aged 14 or 15 years old – and 95 per cent of the victims were female.

This report comes after a campaign involving police and the council was launched earlier this month to tackle the issue.

Borough commander Chief Superintendent Mark Collins told the Guardian that Waltham Forest had the most reports of child sexual exploitation in the capital up until March this year.

He said that in the last 16 months, police in the borough had identified 140 children who are at risk, or have already been exploited.

Of that figure, 62 per cent had been reported as missing from home or in care, and 66 per cent were aged 14 or 15 years old.

The partnership between Waltham Forest council and the Metropolitan Police aims to educate residents and local businesses about reporting the “under-reported” crime.

Last month, borough commander Chief Superintendent Mark Collins told the Guardian how Waltham Forest had the most referrals in the capital for CSE, up until March this year.

Waltham Forest is the first London borough to launch such a scheme, which takes a localised approach to the national campaign, ‘Say Something if you See Something’.

In the coming weeks, they will work collectively to provide education and training to taxi firms, hotel staff, pubs and cafes and pharmacies – businesses highlighted as coming into contact with potential victims of CSE.

Speaking at the launch at Leyton Orients Olympic suite in Oliver Road, Chief Supt Collins said: “Within Waltham Forest over the last 16 months, we’ve identified 140 children who are at risk, or have already been exploited.

“Now that number sounds really high but I welcome that number as it shows we have the infrastructure in place to identify the most vulnerable people.

“Today is focused on increasing awareness across communities but especially the business community so we encourage more people to come forward and report their concerns.”

Of that figure, 62 per cent had been reported as missing from home or in care, and 66 per cent were aged 14 or 15 years old.

Waltham Forest Met PC found guilty of child porn charge

Published May 21, 2013 by misty534

A Metropolitan policeman based at Waltham Forest has been found guilty of making indecent images of children.

PC Adam Holbrook, 29, had denied making 16 images of children in erotic poses.

On Thursday at Westminster Magistrates’ Court he was ordered to pay a £640 fine and £450 in prosecution costs.

He will be placed on the sex offenders register.

PC Holbrook has been suspended pending the outcome of a disciplinary hearing.

PC Holbrook received a commendation in 2007 for his work on the investigation into the murder of Richie Holmes in Chingford.

Mr Holmes, 21, was shot dead in Greenham Crescent in 2005 and PC Holbrook was praised for his work at the scene along with nine other officers.
